Chapter 11

The cabin recently occupied by the departed chef was much smaller than the guest suites. It was tidy and efficiently arranged, but I saw no personal effects such as photos, journals, or electronics. I don’t know what I was expecting. The cops had already processed the scene, hence the removal of the yellow tape from the door. Any interesting personal effects were already at the police station being catalogued, examined, and checked for fingerprints. The sponsors of the contest certainly didn’t want a reminder of the crime distracting the weekend guests.

I was about to open the top drawer of the dresser just in case something had been missed when I heard footsteps in the hall. The door swung inward at the same moment I dove for cover under the bed. I didn’t have time to warn June. If the intruder didn’t kill us—oh wait, we were the intruders—I was pretty sure I was a goner anyway. How could I leave my best friend on her own to face off with a potential murderer?

“May I ask what you’re doing in here?” It was the voice of Detective Rains, and he didn’t sound amused. His shoes passed in front of my face—I’d recognize those well-worn loafers anywhere. I stared at Rains’s feet as I concentrated on coming up with a plan to help June escape the detective’s scrutiny.

I need not have worried. Although I was the actress by trade, June could improvise on the fly with the best of them. I couldn’t see her face, but her voice took on an undertone of damsel in distress.

“Oh, Detective Rains. Lucas? May I call you Lucas?” He said nothing. “Thank goodness you got here just now. I was on my way to Francie’s room to see if she was ready to go, when I noticed this door was open. I peeked inside. I know I shouldn’t have come in, but it just happened. And now here you are. There’s no one here, and it doesn’t look like anything was tampered with, so I guess I’ll be on my way.”

Did I just hear that? Was she going to leave me stranded under Truffle’s bed while Rains tossed the room looking for evidence of a new intruder? Under the circumstances, I couldn’t blame her.

“Hold on a minute. You say the door was open. Was it standing wide open, or was it merely unlocked?”

“Lucas, what are you implying?” Rains didn’t object to June’s use of his first name, so I guessed he was giving in to her charms.

“It’s not safe for you to be nosing around in here, especially alone. You realize the killer may be on board the ship, and if he is, he’s probably watching both you and Francie. Let me walk you to her room.”

“Um, thanks but that won’t be necessary. I’m going to visit the ladies’ room first. And then I might just do a little exploring on my own. I don’t want to bother Francie. Now that her husband is back, I figured they’d want some alone time.
